How to use Common Time →The complete illustrated guide: first session, tempo, meters, looping bars, rhythm editing, practice plans, tuner, and pendulum.

Download Common Time Metronome from the App Store. It supports iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 18 or later.

Start with the free metronome

  1. Choose a time signature from the Meter control and select a grouping when needed.
  2. Set 20–300 BPM using the tempo ruler, plus and minus controls, or Tap Tempo.
  3. Choose a compatible subdivision and adjust accents to shape the pulse.
  4. Press Start. Enable the optional one-bar count-in when you want a clear entrance.

Loop a phrase

Use the bar strip to create a repeating phrase of up to four bars. Individual bars can use different meters and groupings. The highlighted bar and beat show your current position.

Practice with Pro

Pro adds independent per-beat rhythm editing, advanced tuplets, saved practice plans, a chromatic tuner, and the traditional pendulum. A practice plan can arrange sections with their own bar counts, tempo, meter, and rhythm, plus tempo changes and an optional count-in before each section.

Tuner and pendulum

Open the tuner or pendulum from Settings; the pendulum also has a shortcut on the main screen. Both are Pro tools. Free users can try the pendulum for two measures. Opening the tuner pauses the metronome and requests microphone access for live pitch feedback.

Purchases

The everyday metronome stays free. Pro is a one-time in-app purchase with no subscription. Check the purchase screen for your current local price or use Restore Purchases with the Apple Account used for the original purchase.
